Buying A Banger

Recommended Posts

My car unexpectedly died at the weekend, and looking to buy a banger for around 500 quid to tide me over. Anyone know of any local garages that have anything in this price range? Also what would be the best sort of motor to get for so little cash?

Might be worth getting some sort of older 'reliable' diesel with FSH..... depends what sort of driving you are doing. In that bracket I would suggest maybe:

Audi 80 or early A4 (1993-96)

Golf (96ish)

If it's petrol i reckon you could any of the following from around 1996 to 1999:

Vauxhuall: Corsa, Vectra or Astra

Ford: Escort or Fiesta

Renault: Clio or Megane

Not of this lot are particuarly great but if kept well and I suppose under 100k on clock they might do the job

In the summer of 2007, I needed a cheap car for a bit, bought a J plate VW Scirocco for

Well she doesn't have a rusty roof, so no mucky cellar. You should be ok!

hmm

only have 500 quid for a car but wouldnt take a capri for that if you got it?

pity you

MT, have no probs with you having a Capri, but I don't have the time, nor can I be arsed having a car that is essentially a "project"

While you're obviously enjoying what you are doing, I'm looking for as good a car I can get, for as little as possible.

Skint at the moment, and really need it to start everyday!

Is your car more than 10 years old? You could always try using the scrapage scheme? I dont know much about it though but it would be worth looking into.

I wouldn;t expect to see any garage seeling stuff in that range, and if they were it would be 'Honest John's' and I'd rather take my risks privately.

Don't know where your based but the garage in Hatton of Fintray may be of some good to you, Lad there seems ok. I got the Daughter a wee corsa last week cheap enough and it's a nae bad car. It will do her for a first car and something to learn in.
