Paul Lawrie's Corner

Recommended Posts

Great win in Oz for David Law. Some final eagle. Big purse too.

He’s done well. Rocket Scientist said a few years ago that Law was destined for a great career.

The prize money for this one isn't far off his total winnings for last years challenge tour. Great boost for him.

Bob macintyre is looking good for a big year,i was going to say next year but it doesn't end. I think he got a 9on the final hole at sun city, but got a 65 on the third round. Cut out the nines and you might just win a biggie in the next few years.

MacIntyre is the real deal. Valderrama next week is simply preparation for Winged Foot. The best Scottish golfer this century. Watch out for Craig Howie. He's got a class attitude. And Calum Hill is a big talent. With Connor Syme knocking on the door too, we have good talents in the game. Not much behind them unfortunately. The 18+ year old Scottish amateurs good enough to make it don't exist.

This tournament at Olympia Fields is fascinating. Not only is the course so much more interesting than the -30 that won last week, the DJ v. McIlroy dynamic is brilliant to watch.

Personally I think DJ is at least two majors light of where he should be, irrespective of his collapses at Pebble Beach and Chambers Bay. McIlroy on the other hand picked up 4 between 2011 and 2014 and nothing since.

Morikawa is a real deal too and Koepka's comments that week were a joke. Interesting decade ahead. Tiger is finished... when it comes to majors but it so beautiful watching him win at Augusta again.

The best Scottish golfer in my lifetime?

No question. Paul Lawrie, and that's not me being biased. Yes we know Monty won 8 x OoM's including 7 in a row. Yes we know Lyle won two majors (and was undoubtedly the most gifted of ball-strikers) but like Hogan, Paul dug his swing and his success "out of the dirt".

He gets my vote because he deserved it. He had a work ethic, upon which he built a phenomenal attitude and results to go with it.

Just lol.

Lawrie did well, no question of that. But simply not in the same category as Colin Montgomery.

You mean Montgomerie?

I bet he would trade his titles for one major.

Ah sorry about the spelling mistake there mr nazi spelling police.

Being judged on majors should not be the be all and end all. Colin Montgomerie proved his abilities and qualities beyond any reasonable doubt during his career, in many various aspects of the game. He was in the cauldron at majors coming down the stretch but through no real fault of his own didn’t manage to win. The guy was a fantastic golfer and i can’t ever see anyone ever winning 7 order of merits in consecutive years. That alone is a much greater achievement than managing to fire on all cylinders for 4-5 days to win a major, never mind everything else he achieved.

There are quite a large number of major winners, Ben Curtis, Todd Hamilton et al that have proved that being a top player is not a pre requisite to winning a major.

Great admirer of Lawrie, does a lot for the game at grass roots level since stepping back from the top level. Bit of a stretch to call him the best Scottish golfer of our generation though. Monty, Lyle, Torrance then Oor Paul for me.

Today's generation don't have much homegrown talent to get inspired by, certainly no-one that stands out from the crowd.

Thank you rocket but in my time Sandy Lyle is the best Scottish player with Monty a close second, I did well considering where I was when I turned pro and my wife and I have done some good work off the course, I’ve had some amazing help from sponsors etc with our foundation and will now work even harder now bringing through the next generation. I enjoy that side of it more than playing now and is very rewarding but still feel I can win some seniors events       Thanks paul

Nice one loon. A proper NE legend and AFC fan. Hope your injury niggles go away. My loon is a member at your course and enjoys the more casual aspect of golf rather than some stuffier golf clubs.

I seem to remember him  completely bottling one on the last few holes.

I hope the next stage is just as fruitful and you help to bring through a few future stars!

Sandy versus Monty (keeping Paul out of it for now) reminds me of Darren Clarke versus Harrington. Shere relatively raw talent (possibly less successful than he could have been) versus a digger (who Of course found a seam on the back of serious work off the course).  Certainly that’s my perception from outside the ropes.
