I don't think people were comparing the eras because as you correctly mentioned that is pointless. It was the mentality of McInnes compared to Fergie that was being compared. McInnes has developed a defeatist attitude when facing the old firm. No way would you hear Fergie come out with any pre match defeatist comments ot just accept we would likely lose to them. He'd still truly believe he could go to Glasgow and win a decent percentage of games there.

 

Many many times his Man United side won trophies and big games despite coming up against richer clubs with better players and stronger squads. Despite that you never once heard defeatist or inferiority complex type comments from him. It just wasn't in his nature to show any sign of weakness whatsoever.
