Viruses come in many different "forms"......but they all need to infect a host living organism to survive. Parasites in other words. However if they didn't mutate....the host organism would eventually develop its own resistance to the virus and it would die off. So they mutate....developing different properties to the original virus that enable them to overcome or "defeat/bamboozle" the defence mechanisms of the host. In humans this is the immune system. And artificially boosted by immunisations in certain cases. Some never need to fully mutate, just create new ways of avoiding the immune system. Some viruses attach themselves to the outside of a cell and for want of a better phrase "suck it dry" to gain whatever "nutrition" it needs to survive and most importantly..to multiply. Others (such as HIV) are retroviruses...they need to actually penetrate into the cell and inserts its own RNA into the cell's DNA to actively alter that cell to allow it to then reproduce. The flu virus fully mutates. Ie by the end of its mutating cycle...you end up with essentially a totally new virus that has none of the original "properties" of the original virus. It will still cause the same symptoms as the original virus. It's just finding different ways at a nanoscopic level to ensure its survival. But once in a blue moon it will (purely by chance) have a property at this level that causes us massive problems...maybe make it suddenly massively more transmissable or become randomly more deadly (think of the Spanish flu in 1918) The problem we have with covid is because it is mutating so rapidly. And because it is brand new.....we knew nothing about it's properties to begin with and as fast as the scientist as finding out about them....bang a new mutation is discovered with different properties. The South African and especially Brazilian mutations are extremely worrying as it looks very much like the vaccines that have just been rolled out may not be effective against them at all. The sheeple who trust the Tories are part of the problem, a big part, a very big part. It is our compliance with the inept and/or corrupt leadership and failing to ask the right questions that gives them power. We are sleepwalking into the future. Reduce the contacts so reduce the opportunity for the virus to spread. See that's a bit better. That would be much better at this moment in time than the current set up. Not sustainable going forward especially High School. Primary school yes. My youngest two are in a school with small classes anyway and so the classes are a mix of years. High school is a different ball game altogether. That needs to be full time ASAP. It's a shambolic situation just now with classes in some subjects being well managed as possible as they are easy enough to structure (English, maths and so on) The others are a complete waste of time doing remote learning. Absolutely no need to be doing PE or RE for example. Just tying up kids time that could be spent getting them wiser to the world. They can do PE anytime. Link to comment

What folk don't seem to realise that it just isn't feasible to have educational and corporate buildings open and functioning, when only partly occupied. The cost of transport, cleaning, maintenance, heating, lighting, staff etc just isn't economical and a logistical nightmare to plan and manage. Half of the kids that people are concerned about in terms of their education probably won't apply themselves at school anyway. Link to comment

Home schooling if nowhere near the experience required for being in school. It's a shambles. IT issues, lack of interaction, teachers snowed under preparing lessons that are either ignored, misunderstood or complained about by parents with no clue about what the lesson actually is. List goes on and on. KIds need to be back to school getting proper lessons in a real learning environment as soon as possible. More to school than x + y Especially for younger children who are missing out on key developmental areas. Link to comment

manboobs109
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/17/first-fruits-of-vaccine-rollout-should-be-seen-in-weeks-experts-predict " However, it is in the second category – hospitalisations – that the mass vaccination rollout will have a noticeable impact, and that is because the programme has been specifically targeted at the old and the vulnerable – those most likely to need treatment in a hospital. As a result, hospitalisations are likely to start to decline at the end of January and reach 40% of current levels by the middle of March. This decline will be less apparent for those admitted to intensive care units (ICUs). Once in hospital, the very elderly are generally not selected for such treatment, and so ICU admissions are likely to drop to only 65% of current use by early April." Presumably this is all predicated on us all still being locked down until April " However, it is the impact on death rates that will show the greatest effect of vaccinations, it is thought. The rate will not start to drop noticeably until late February but once the decline starts it should accelerate quickly until, by mid-April, death rates linked to Covid-19 will be reduced to below 20% of current levels. This reduction – in hospitalisations and deaths – suggests that the NHS, while still facing continued severe stress over the next few weeks, can expect to achieve stability by spring." So lockdown and vaccine will get us to 200 to 300 deaths a day by Spring. We had restrictions when it was single figure deaths a day. Link to comment
