What’s the most ‘entertaining’ Dons game you’ve been to?

Recommended Posts

I remember a Scottish cup 3rd round home tie against Celtic in 87 that ended 2-2. Pitch was completely frozen. 2-0 down at half time, we came back through a Bert penalty and a Hewitt equaliser. Joe Miller and Paul Wright hitting the post and then the bar within seconds of each other when we were going for a third.

Think this was my first game at Pittodrie in the Merkland (where I could join in the singin) so the level of excitement I experienced may not have been in proportion to the excitement of the game itself. I’ve hunted round YouTube, but can’t find any highlights from this match.

Anyway, the replay at Parkhead was 0-0, but we lost second replay (my first midweek away match) at Dens Park to a Paul McStay goal.

The 1995 run in was something else.  Tynecastle being my personal favourite.  Looking like being relegated at one point - Dodds winner then news came through Hibs had scored a late, late winner at Tannadice.

Some bounce

Falkirk and Dunfermilne away were fantastic days out in 95

Another that comes to mind was Partick away in the SC in 90, 6-2 and a Van Der Ark hat trick. Great Day out and an unbelievable atmosphere and bounce. Gilhaus injured and I think Watt made his debut and had a first half nightmare, pitch was an absolute mess but at that time we played some unbelievable attacking football. Nicholas, Gilhaus and Mason were superb that season and it was probably a period where we played the best football I have seen from the Dons, bar the obvious 80's team this was a superb team and would walk the league if they were playing Today

Lot of trouble that day before and after.

Mason, Nicholas, Bett, Gillhaus Jess, Booth, Van Der Ark, and  add in Paatelainen, that 3-4 Yr spell was the best attacking players I've witnessed at Pittodrie

That was a time of brilliant entertainment....Great to watch. Mason, Gillhaus, Nicholas, Bett, Jess and Booth (albeit injury prone to put it mildly) would be worth millions in today’s market...

Hell of a lot of stuff came over the fence from the Partick fans that day. We were packed in half the enclosed terrace that ran the length of the pitch. Great performance and a quality day...

Went on a pleasing random YouTube trail (non porn) this afternoon prompted by the game above.  Some Dons and some occasional forays elsewhere.  Won’t be popular here but included a 96 LC final I have no recollection of between a post euro Gascoigne inspired Huns and a better than I remember him Mccan inspired hertz.

cant fault the football.  Despicable cunts otherwise obvs.

Europe

Copenhagen was brilliant.

Bayern 2007/8 was also an electric atmosphere.

Domestic

The St Johnstone league cup semi final was probably a high point for me. After being to so many losing semi finals,  the absolute relief when we scored and then scored a second was immense.

League game wise there's been quite a few. Not so many recently, but any game that has a last minute winner get's the thumbs up!

The quarter final away to Motherwell with 10 men for 80+ mins was some bounce as well

The last game mentioned involved a certain Dan Rivers and a can of a Prince's ham.

Brian McClair got the winner if I remember correctly min. Cunt.

Suppose McInnes can't get a break from a slagging at the moment but the amount of people mentioning Bayern and Copenhagen games is telling. A lot is made of McInnes "qualifying" for Europe 7 seasons in a row but we really have done fuck all...

Its not that we've done fuck all (although I cant deny we have).  We have entered possibly 5 of those 7 completely unprepared squad wise and paid the price either by being straight papped oot or by struggling in the early legs and picking up injuries/suspensions as  we try to plug the early gaps.  Throw in Derek's notorious cautiousness and you have our Euro record there for all to see.

Aye it does start brutal early now to be fair. Although most teams are in the same boat. Mental to think we knocked out Dnipro in October in the first round!

That’s the problem really. Perhaps our best results in Europe under McInnes came in his earlier years and all of those away from Home (v Gronigen, Reijka and  more recently Burnley). None of those teams have much European pedigree but I suppose that is more down to the setup of the Europa now compared to the Calderwood era. Its tougher to reach the group stages but not insurmountable. We’ve just never had the belief to beat these teams, upset the applecart and go that step further. We can’t keep persevering and hoping things will eventually improve.  It needs new ideas and a fresh approach and unfortunately that means sweeping changes to the coaching staff.

Aberdeen 3 Bayern 2.  Pittodrie's greatest night.  The lows of the Bayern second goal followed by the double whammy of the 2 goals by McLeish and Johnny Hewitt would be hard to top. Emotions were all over the shop that night.

My other special game would be the 1982 Scottish Cup Final. Particularly extra time when the ageing Hun defence were falling over as the Dons tore them a new arsehole.  Topped by Tattie's final goal blasted into the empty net.  Superb.

August 23rd 2003.

Losing to Jimmy Calderwood's Land o the Giants' Dunfermline at Pittodrie, one of the Dunfermline players needs treatment behind our goal at the Dick End.

Trainer sees to the injury, stands up, walks into the goalpost with his face. Cue the biggest cheer of the game.

Great sporting moment., right there.

Aside from that, the game vs Ujpest Dosza, Quarter Final of the Cup Winner's Cup, where we're 2-0 down from the first leg to the dirtiest fucking team outside of Rapid Vienna. Absolute animals.

In the second leg we hammered their goal without a break, but the woodwork, the goalkeeper, and sheer bad luck made it seem like it was going to deny us a semi-final place.

Step forward Mark McGhee in one of the best individual performances you'll see from a player in an Aberdeen shirt.

The entire team was brilliant, in truth. I'd have put money on us to beat any team in the world that night.
