Salary caps. Squad limits. Limited loans.

It's the only way.

Just a pity we can't have a draft type of leveller and enforce contracts in the way the NFL do.

Employment law prevents salary caps.

The ONLY reason that it works in other countries, namely the US, is because they get exemptions.

If the Scottish Parliament was willing to grant Scottish football teams such a thing then there would at that stage be no reason not to.

FFP sure as hell doesn't work.

At any level.

I'd be interested to know where you would set the salary caps. You going to set them just so we can compete with the OF? Or so that a St Johnstone or Hamilton or whoever can compete with us?

That would be for a competent governing body to decide, but hopefully it would be implemented in a way that encourages a more competitive playing field than currently exists.

there are multiple options for a salary cap, hard, soft, luxury tax.

the most simplistic would be to look at what clubs currently spend as a % of turnover, find an average, then look at those turnover figures, again find an average and set as the % of that, the biggest spanner is europe in setting the figures

I don't agree with you on this if you think for one minute that Sky/BT would ever have any say in forcing the bigot brothers move into English football against the will of English football (the biggest and most successful/lucrative and arguably competitive league in the world).
If that ludicrous notion had any credence, it would have actually happened years ago. Not now when it's even more irrelevant.

It's only because of the ludicrous sums of money that they are pushing more for it nowadays. And Sky/BT will want to freshen up a "stale" product at some point, so can see it happening to create interest

Quick fix.

Keep the league as it is until the split.

After the split the bottom six play as before to determine relegation.

However the top six move into a play off scenario.

Round 1
Game A. 3rd place plays 6th place at home
Game B. 4th place plays 5th place at home
Rest week for 1st and second place

Round 2
Game C. 1st place plays winner of Game B at home
Game D. 2nd place plays winner of Game A at home
Game E. Loser of Game A v loser of game B with the highest ranking team playing at HOME. This is the six and fifth place play off.

Round 3
Game F. Winner of game C plays winner of game D to decide league winner. Highest ranking team plays at home.
Game G. Loser of game C plays loser of game D to decide 3rd and 4th place. Highest ranking team plays at home.

Piss easy to implement and it still acknowledges the old firms financial power by potentially giving them home advantage and less games to win the league assuming they are 1st and 2nd after the split, but at the same time gives any team making the top six a realistic chance to win the league.

Appreciate that the team in sixth will end up with no home games after the split and thus less income, but if you can't accept that sacrifice for a chance to win the league then your club shouldn't exist.

Surely the broadcasters would eat this up as most of the games would be massive.

If the old firm can't agree to that, then we quit the league.

I quite liked Shinniesta's take on it. The idea of them being lost in English football mediocrity forever has a lot of appeal.

I honestly think it would eventually happen if they went down there. They would be on a par with the West Ham's, Newcastle's, Aston Villa's, Everton's of this world. That would never be good though for their fans but realistically that would be their level. The top players would always go to London, Manchester or Liverpool before Glasgow every single time.

They would start at the bottom of the ladder down there so for the first 5 years or so there would be excitement for their fans something new coming through the league's aiming for the promised land of the EPL. But I honestly think once they got there and after the realisation sets in that they are mid table fodder at best who just can't compete with the true EPL heavyweights it won't appeal to them so much anymore.

It's not like a Bournemouth, Portsmouth or Burnley scenario as the fans of those clubs don't have winning in their DNA. Just getting to the EPL is the realisation of a dream for the fans of those clubs. But the ugly sisters have always won or been in contention to win. Once that is permanently stripped from them (would probably take 4 or 5 years in the EPL for them to finally realise they are no longer the big dogs and never will be down there) I honestly think the vast majority of their fans could not handle being also rans. But by that time it would be too late they would have made their bed and they would have to lie in it. Will be great for the players and staff at both clubs as they would be much better paid and be of a higher standard than what is there now. But the fans would not enjoy being serial losers who might win the odd big game at home here and there but over a season can't seriously compete to win domestic silverware or get into the CL places etc. They would have to settle for being permanently second best which eventually would absolutely kill those "fans".

You could well be right. But that depends if you think the current structure of football is never going to change and that 20 years from now the ugly sisters will definitely still be playing their club football in Scotland. The landscape has changed massively since I first started following football and I think most can see that the club game is building towards an eventual elite European League so the big boys can have their very own closed shop big boys league only. You only need to look at things like La Liga agreeing to play some domestic league games in the US to see that things are always changing. Money ultimately talks in football.

If the elite Euro League happens (I think it will happen in my lifetime and I'm in my 40's) then it would obviously have a massive domino effect on domestic leagues across Europe which could eventually mean the next tier of European teams forming their own leagues. Which could potentially mean the ugly sisters eventually departing the Scottish Premier League as they have been desperate to do for years now. Or would you say that is impossible?

Short term we have to forget Europe to progress things anyway.

Chasing the European crap is killing our game tbh.

Chasing euro football is killing the Scottish game?

Based on what?
