Aberdeen V Partick Thistle (0 - 0)

Recommended Posts

I am hoping by Shankland getting taken off at exactly 60 mins today that it has been decided he is starting on Saturday. Also no u20s game until mid April so got to unleash him.

Two injury worries only it would appear. Anderson (who many had thought would show face for Consi match) and Hayes (who is back doing some training)

I may be missing something but I don't think Driver looked at all match fit in the last game he played...okay an assist for Rooney goal but other than that he didn't do much of note in previous game when played out wide.

Unless he's to be played behind the striker, I don't feel he deserves to start.

Behind the striker is I think his best position.

Definitely nae fit. Looks like he's still a decent enough player mind.

Wouldn't drop Rooney for Shankland, wouldn't move Rooney out of position to fit Shankland in, wouldn't try and shoehorn Shankland in in an unfamiliar position just to get him in the team.

Looked OK when he's come on for us, but until he scored for the Scotland u21's last week I don't think he's really done anything someone like McManus hadn't done before him.

Gaffer will know when the time is right to start him, probably if and when the league is out of sight, we're almost guaranteed 2nd and Rooney has hit his 30.

:clangers2: Maybe cos he's nae (firstly) been given the chance as main/central striker & (secondly) cos he's only been given around 15 mins (if that) on average in all his games he's been given OUT OF POSITION.

Hard to prove yourself in those circumstances.

I'm not saying drop Rooney but maybe (when shanky does get his chances to come on) shove Rooney wide/in behind him rather than tother way about.

Reckon Shankland would have had as many as Rooney this season given the same game time & position :dontknow: saying that because given the chances Rooney has also missed. His actual return percentage is nae that great in reality. Great compared to strikers of the recent past but he's actually missed a helluvalot of chances.

Based on what exactly?

Shankland had also missed chances

All about percentages (as stated in my post) Rooneys return whilst it is great compared to recent strikers is nae that fantastic given the amount of chances he's actually had. McGinns record was a lot better than his a couple of seasons ago & from less actual chances.

Obviously haven't gone into this in massive detail & researched it but pretty sure (based on attending games) most would agree.

Rubbish about Rooneys percentages, he has good return rate.

Rooneys holds the ball up well and is strong, and also has a strikers / poachers brain, which had help, net him a few goals.

Rooney has good track record at this level, and works weĺl in the teams type of play.

Shankland I like a lot, he will become a very good player, and congratulations to Aberdeen for seeing his potential, but its Rooney for me before throwing in the raising star, as we want to win the game, get the points in the bag and then throw caution to the wind, and start changing key personnel in team line ups.

Rant finished ;)

I'm not arguing that he's a good TALLY but his actual return rate for chances is WORSE than that of McGinn's from a couple of seasons ago as our main striker.

Try arguing that Rooney hasn't had MORE chances from our more attacking play than McGinn did when he was played as our main striker.

Rooney may have a decent work rate etc. but he is basically a penalty box striker & that is it. Don't mistake my opinion on this as me seeing this as a negative.

Shankland would return as much as Rooney imo because I think he has more to his game than Rooney than just a penalty box striker. His inexperience at top level would reduce his return but even then it would be as much as Rooney given same game time & preferred position.

This is all just my opinion & you are entitled to treat it as BS but the stats between Rooney & McGinn are there for all to see.

Rooney makes a lot of chances by being in the right place at the right time. McGinns goals per shot ratio was higher that season. Everything he hit seemed to go in including the shots from areas that now hit the wood work.

Rooney is with out a doubt the best striker we have had for ages, play him up top. Wether you add Shankland up there with him is a different matter.

I can't see how anyone can say Shankland would be on the same goal tally of Rooney with any degree of certainty given he's completely unproven at any level above youth/League 1.

I'm hopeful he'll be a player, but demanding he's thrown up top and our 25 goal striker has to make way isn't the way I'd play it at this stage of the season.

Not altogether comfortable with the hype and pressure that's on the boy already, hopefully he'll have what it takes to handle it unlike Fyvie etc.

Rooney is a 15 goal striker. Do not kid yourself on with the Euro goals.

We're talking league goals & this seasons top scorers (in all teams) are pretty low on average as far as league form goes.

Shankland will thrive on the pressure. Give him the chance & he'll prove it (only my opinion mind)

If we had your kind of trust/opinion in young players, the likes of Jess would never have been the player he was for us.

Shankland currently has a 0% goals to chances ratio

You are talking drivel

Shankland has NOT been given any game time up front as main striker. He's been given the odd fleeting chance as "in the hole" type striker when we are no longer pushing for goals.

I'm not advocating "dropping" Rooney for him (not in the slightest) but I do say we need to give him a fairer crack of the whip. Let Rooney drop in a little when Shankland comes on for a change.

Stick DG down the pecking order BEHIND Shanky for a while as well.
