Best Dons Managers

Recommended Posts

Recent comments and observations on Jimmy Calderwood got me thinking where he stands in the league table of Dons managers. I go back to the Tommy Pearson days so since then I would rate our managers as follows.

1. Alex Ferguson

2. Eddie Turnbull

3.Derek McInnes

4.Alex Smith

5.Jimmy Calderwood

Close run thing between Smith and Calderwood but Smith won trophies. Also Derek seriously pushing Turnbull for second.

Billy McNeil shold be in there and the Scott/Smith co-management team is definitely top 3 imho.

Who was the last non-of team to win the cup double?

Played some good football under Willie Miller and Ian Porterfield as well.

I'd hae them afore the likes of JC and, honestly speaking DM [at this stage].

Have to look at how the squad developed under the managers - McNeill moved what McLeod had started to the next level and Fergie moved it on further - Turnbull took our club forward greatly with what he did and given where we were McInnes has done well - Miller and Porterfield had good squads to begin with as I recall - not sure they pushed them further.

Beat me to it!

Not sure I'd have McInnes above Smith not yet anyway. Smith won two trophies and was less than 90 minutes away from winning the league in a tougher era.

Might need to add in Jocky Scott to that assessment as Smith's team deteriorated once Scott not in the frame - era may have been tougher but players and pulling power also considerably better. Would I take Smith over McInnes today - don't think so though having assembled the squad he now has it is certainly up to him to do something positive with it this year.

Smith light years ahead of Calderwood. I'd even argue that McNeill made a greater contribution than Calderwood even though it was only for one season. Willie Miller's 92-93 season probably tops anything Calderwood did.

Ally Mcleods league cup also can't be discounted.

Turnbull was a forward thinking manager that really changed the way we trained and played and won the Scottish cup as well as coming second in the league. He has to be for me second after Fergie. Halliday won the league in the 50's so he must also be included at no. 3. I would say McInnes just makes no. 5 at present with MacLeod at no. 4.

The King speaking about Turnbull & Macleod on the Stand Free DVD shows everything you need to know about the respect the players had for them.

Pretty much this, but would swap Aitken for Hegarty.

Aitken was pretty awful but he did oversee a League Cup Semi win v Rangers and the subsequent final to land a trophy.

Tbh harsh on Hegarty as he had to pick up the pieces of Millers tenure and the players were shite and didn't give a fuck anyway so he had no chance really
