RAZOR

We were down at Alton Towers for a few days there. (Staffordshire is it?)

We stayed in a nearby place called Butterton, which had lots of signs saying it was a "doubly thankful village".

I didn't know what this meant, so I looked it up: it means that, amazingly, through both world wars, every single man from the village who was called up survived the war.

After WW1, places where they didn't lose a single man killed called themselves "thankful" - hence "doubly thankful" if they repeated the feat during WW2.

I thought that was quite nice.

A friend claims that "doubly thankful" places don't ring their church bells on remembrance sunday, as most places do, out of respect for places which did have men killed.
