A Good Time For Planning League Restructuring Again?

Recommended Posts

With the talk of changing Europa format again & aiming more for longer European football calendar & shorter domestic calendars. This would be a good time for Scottish football to plan the restructuring & a larger top flight with teams only playing each other twice.

16 team top league with 30 games plus relegation play offs for lower teams

16 team second league 30 games plus relegation play offs for upper & lower teams

10 team lower league, with same play each other 4 times (36 games) or expand with more if needed to up fixtures from play each other twice like leagues above. Maybe even add reserve sides but with no promotion allowances.

There's already too many teams.

Scotch fitba peaked with a 10 team top division.

Any team that travels with fewer than 100 supporters should be sent packing to the Rymans and EvoSticks of this world.

Finances at the time were what makes you believe it was the ten team league that made it better.

The game would have been in the same shit today, regardless of 10, or 12 team league.

Major change is what is required to overhaul game here for better. Not minor tweaking.

Yes it could be a huge failure but worth risking

Pros and cons Isuppose. Anything different with a push towards developing our youngsters would be good. Would more matches in a European League actually be good for our support than domestic games? That’s what Lawwell is predicting. Our game needs a shake and we’ve maybe missed the opportunity from 2012, but I think with the financial mess the Huns are in might mean they’d agree more easily to something that helps them stabilise, unfortunately that’s what will drive any change, unless they die again

I am all for playing teams only twice a season. Puts more importance on games if there are less to gain direct advantage or make up for losing one.

Look at this season as perfect example & our games against the Huns & Tims.

Why would clubs who are skint enough as it is want to play 8 fewer games per season?

A rare thing indeed. A post of yours I agree with.

16 teams, play each other once at home and once away would be the ideal.

Money men in the game won't allow it, tv and advertising won't allow potentially only 2 Rangers and Celtic games.

I think what Lawell of Celtic is trying to get at in the link, is that there is hope of better finance from Europa restructuring in future to allow compensation to cover less domestic fixtures.

With 16 team league we would have 15 Home games compared to 19

So we can assume a 21% reduction in SPFL based turnover

Season ticket prices cant stay the same with a 20% reduction, advertising, sponsorship and so on - TV revenue as well

So to a club such as Aberdeen that would be a loss of £2million on a £10 million turnover

That assumes Sky would be interested in the SPFL with only 2 Old firm games a season - unlikely and BT wont be too bothered either

a club like Motherwell or St Johnstone would lose £1 million or so

Europa finances are not going to cover that and would kill Scottish football dead

As much as I would love to see a 16 team league the above is the reality and it’s a shit reality. No way would the clubs, including Aberdeen agree to it.

Add play offs at the top (as well as at the bottom)

More games = more money

Exciting finish guaranteed = more TV interest

Probably an extra OF game every year

Not a bad shout but how would you work the playoffs? A title play off is out and do we have enough European slots to have a play off for? Would adding more teams to the playoffs for relegation help? The relegation battle in our league is the most competitive part of our league and the TV companies don’t really care.
