This season is possibly Aberdeen's best opportunity of reaching the group stages. Would be massive for the club financially. Would we be considered a top 100 club if we did?

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes hopes the decision by Uefa to have one-off matches for Champions League and Europa League qualifiers, rather than home and away ties, could benefit the Dons as they try to reach the Europa League group stage.

Why would anyone give a fuck how we were "considered".

Weird.

If Aberdeen make the group stages of the Europa League, I'll donate 10 season tickets(lowest price available) to the community Trust.

Aberdeen have been fairly vocal about making it into the top 100 European clubs. I suppose by striving to be you should in theory be more successful.

Correct ma quine. I couldn't give a monkeys (are you still allowed to say that?) where we are in some rigged poll, as long as we continue to progress and win more games than we draw or lose and remain competitive, most of us would settle for that.

Yeah, I get that.

I just think it's a pathetic and servile stance to adopt.

I think we'd have to qualify for a few seasons in a row to get into the top 100.

I can see how it would help to raise the profile of the club, attract players and investment, so I understand why someone like Cormack would see it as a tangible indication of progress.

👍. Nobody more pleased than I Shep.

It’s a tough one to call for Derek the one off winner takes all match. Appreciate also it’s draw dependent. Do we do the Celtic final thing and try and keep it tight and nick it. Or do we go for it and simply try and score more than they do.

We'd need quite a few season of regularly qualifying, but we also need to go further than QR3.

This season we moved from something like 191st to 177th, but it will need progression further in Europe to start making inroads to a top 100 club.

The challenge will be that we are a better counter attacking team than we are trying to break down defences sitting in.

What is is that gives Del the confidence that this season gives us the best ever chance of making it to the group stages - Are we some sort of one off game “specialists”?

Because statistically, we’ve no better chance than any other Euro diddy team, of making it t the holy grail,

Sometimes I've thought we've ran out of steam playing every thursday for six weeks.

So it could be a benefit that the games are spread out, we have our match fitness and we are seeded for first two rounds.

I think the most telling thing is that in the last 6 seasons of failing to reach the group stage, only 1 of the sides who have knocked us out have reached the group stage (Apollon in 2017-18). To me, that suggests we're still quite a way from being at the level required to reach the group stage.

Three things.

1/. Don’t be complacent re the first two rounds. Albeit they’ve been our first competitive matches but we’ve still laboured to get past them.

2/. Arguably we’ve been unlucky in the draw

3/. Round 4 with Champions league drop outs is obviously pot luck. But you’ve got to be there to ‘get lucky’ and you’ve got to be ruthless once you’re there. We’ve done neither. Much as it disgusts me to say it Huns vs The Danish lot (midgetland or something) and then Legia Warsaw is the perfect example.

I'm not trying to be argumentative for the sake of it here, but 5 out of 6 times we've been knocked out by teams who weren't good enough to reach the group stage. The seeding system has pretty much taken the luck out of it.

I’ve had this arguement on here before. Burnley and Sociedad were unlucky and the other one that springs to mind was Maribor whom I personally thought we should have beaten. Apollon should have been put to the sword at home - which takes us back to my original point - do we game manage and nick it (wattie smith style) or go for broke and potentially dick it up given our usual inability to score.

Well, given McInnes' track record, it's game management all the way against any team perceived as superior.

In Rijeka this year we barely got forward at all we dug in from kick off for a 0-0 draw and those poor tactics cost us the tie

His record in Europe is horrific.

Each team that have knocked us out have been beatable.

Each exit is down to his mismanagement.
Some to a worse extent than others.

I think the only team that we genuinely didn’t have a chance against was real sociedad, they were just miles better than us. As you said the rest were beatable.

Id've loved us to get the draws that sevco have managed to get in the past couple of years. Indubitably they have had it much easier in the opening 3 rounds. That said...they've at least tried to play some attacking football in away legs and have reaped the benefit of doing so.

You just know that if we get an away tie...in a one off match McInnes is going to have is sitting in trying not to lose and hopefully nicking a goal on a rare counter attack. Which generally back-fires and we end up conceding anyway. Presumably there will be no away goals counting double in the event of a drawn match this season which will only reinforce his safety first attitude.
