I half agree with you in that I too think 16&17 year olds should have the vote. Through modern studies lessons they’re probably more clued than a lot of other age groups and the Indy ref showed how engaged they get and how cognisant of the issues they are/were.

more likely to use internet to research issues and politicians and less likely to hold outdated views re topical topics like climate change.

disagree re taking vote away from the oldies though.
we should be encouraging democracy and not enacting suppression of a demographic.

Is it Australia that makes voting mandatory?

worth giving that a whirl?

Acht you (and others) are probably right. Democracy should champion all. Democracy is perhaps the biggest reason I believe in Independence, so it's a contradiction to want deny anyone a vote.

Id definitely make voting mandatory. If you don't believe in anything being proposed, you can spoil your ballot.

I do feel sympathy for them as fucked if I know how to handle it. But I also think that they play off each other as if Boris say’s just crack on and go for it and it spikes, Sturgeon will say he is an incompetent buffoon and she is doing the best for Scotland. On the flip side if Nicola says go for it and it spikes, Boris will say this is why she shouldn’t be running the country.

It’s a fucking no win situation. @dad needs to sort this shit out. By the the fire.

We had a democratic referendum that rejected independence though.

"On the other, there’s the desperate private sector, already reeling from pay cuts and large scale job losses.

I wonder if the smug WFH brigade, selfishly boasting about their quality of life and how much money they’re saving, ever spare a thought for the thousands of small businesses going bankrupt.

Or for redundant shop, airline and hospitality trade staff facing a bleak future. Thought not"

Voting isn't mandatory. Getting your name ticked off the electoral roll is. There's a difference. I think compulsory voting is undemocratic. Where's the free choice?

Nevertheless, a reasonably consistent picture is beginning to emerge from high income countries. Reports suggest either no rise in suicide rates (Massachusetts, USA11; Victoria, Australia13; England14) or a fall (Japan,9 Norway15) in the early months of the pandemic. The picture is much less clear in low income countries, where the safety nets available in better resourced settings may be lacking. News reports of police data from Nepal suggest a rise in suicides,12whereas an analysis of data from Peru suggests the opposite.10

It'd be good to see an updated study of the kind above.

Norway has a lot of volunteers who walk bridges to stop people flinging themselves off them.

Those volunteers had to stay home coz of the covids.

There’s been a rise in people who have gone “missing”. Bigger than the decrease in people who have suicided themselves.

Clusterfuck in Sydney with some yank cart tart spreading the covids.

Meanwhile WAs respiratory hospital beds are full at the moment as there are two other viruses going about. Eh had it last week, just walked it off.

Still, if all the beds are taken coz of a flu virus, why aren’t we on lockdown? Protect the health service etc etc.

What is so special about the covids? The other viruses must be jealous.

Interesting that according to surveys, about 50% of black folk are wary of the vaccine,  compared to about 25% of white folk.  I thought they'd be more enthusiastic since it apparently affects them more?

They understandably don't trust vaccines from white folk, primarily because of the Tuskegee 'study' (read Live Human Experimentation) that lasted for about 40 years.

The silver lining is that I'll be able to get my vaccine quicker.
