tutankamun
Lionel Messi and his father Jorge have been sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, but the Barcelona forward is not expected to spend any time behind bars. The Court of Catalonia on Wednesday found that the Messis had evaded tax on Lionel’s image rights, with more than €4m owed in back payments. But because the court’s sentence was less than two years and neither Messi has a criminal record, neither will be sent to prison.Prosecutors had alleged that tax havens in Belize and Uruguay were used to conceal earnings from image rights. But Messi said he “knew nothing” about his financial affairs. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2016/jul/06/lionel-messi-barcelona-prison-21-months-tax-fraud?CMP=twt_gu Link to comment

Man makes too much money and thinks nothing bad will happen? When you're that good\rich it doesn't make sense to spend time reading up on tax laws. If he did he wouldn't be where he is now; earning 15m a year. Instead he'd be higuain or palermo. besides he probably thinks it's boring as fuck and would rather pay someone to do it for him. OddJob
This is the thing that's really annoying. If that were just an ordinary person like ourselves, we'd be instantly jailed, but just because of who he is, he gets off scott free. Shocking Link to comment

Foster14
Tax affairs aren't that difficult unless you try to avoid paying tax. Then it depends how much you wish to push that tax avoidance, entering the grey area between avoidance and evasion. When you instruct someone else to make sure you pay as little tax as possible, then it is best to try and keep at least a passing interest in what they are doing for you, given it will ultimately be you that is responsible for the items you submit and sign. He has ultimately indulged in what all multi-national corporations do. That said, it is a lot easier to identify that Messi, a person, spends the majority of his time in Spain, compared to identifying where branding, product development etc belong. Link to comment

maryhilldon
Couldn't find a thread to bump so on the subject of Argentinian football, watched that Boca v River Plate game last night. Holy fuck! What a lot of shite. 47 fouls! 40 fuckin 7. Barely 3 passes strung together before someone got clattered. Not even a red card, the game would've been abandoned with a Scottish ref in the first half when one of the sides went down to 7 men. Unless it was an old firm game of course. Link to comment
maryhilldon
Sounds great. No benders in the stands either I bet.It wasn't great, it was boring. Just a succession of fouls. Not even nasty studs up fouls or square goes, just barging into each other (hence no reds). Crowd looked awesome though, the pussies that run the game here would have a heart attack. Link to comment
