Hmmm... If I knew what you were on about it sounds like a plan... Where would I find out more ?

Right click on the disc, explore disc and copy the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file, paste to HD.

You should be able to play that file using VLC player

Right now you're ripping the disc and changing its format to MP4 during the rip. Its the conversion of the file thats taking so long, not the copying of the file itself.

Test it first obviously, its been a long time since I copied a DVD onto my HD but thats how I used to do it.

Ok - getting the idea of this now....

If I copy the ISO does that mean it's still restricted - i.e. If it's a Region 1 DVD and my Laptop is set at Region 2 and I can't change it anymore... ?

Copying the ISO seems the sensible way forward rather than conversion.... decisions decisions...

VLC Player plays almost anything.

I'd test it by doing 1 from each region, see how that goes.

Seems to work fine - clearly a bit bigger in file size terms then I'd originally thought... But these days that's not much of a chore when it comes to saving on a hard drive is it...?

Depends on the hard drive connection.

wifi takes its time.

I've got all my shit on my airport time machine. Just back up through the night, no fucking about and its all done by the time I wake up.

Yeah it's DVD's of stuff that aren't readily available (that I've already bought).... So comedy stuff that has long since fallen off the radar, Dons DVDs that need digitised... and stuff that don't have HQ rips on the interwebz... then the DVDs are getting punted to eBay as I'm trying to downsize all that shit...

Now that I know that VLC plays the .iso's I'm just ripping then, I'm assuming they can be converted if I want to... Bought a 4TB WD Passport External Hard Drive and will stick them all on there and hope I don't lose or destroy it... I think I'm happy with that after a few false starts !
