I'm confused to how you can compare it to other countries if the prerequisite seems to be that living in the country is the key to being able to judge on it? Link to comment

The World Happiness Report that showed up your bullshit of residents of Norway being miserable? Not sure if you're referring to that or something else. I can only assume your reluctance to explain is to try to avoid being shown up again. Link to comment

Foster14
It's more that darkie takes one report and then rubbishes any opinion of someone who has actually lived there. Norway consistently comes out at the top end of lifestyle reports. You are saying that you lived there, and that all things aren't great, suggesting the report may be incorrect, but at the same time, surely can't correlate that to living anywhere else at the same time. That's why these reports are shite. To call Norwegian people happy is ridiculous, the language doesn't even have a native word for happy. The word fornøyd means satisfied and can be used for happy. In reality people use the English word. Link to comment

Surely basing their happiness on when they are at work in a tin hut in the North Sea is a bit prejudicial though. I would suggest the fact that they can go skiing and have cabins (hutte) in the mountains in which to eat cake is kind of a refutation of most of what you have said about Norway being shit. In reality people use the English word.No. You think that it's "shite" solely because it contradicts your narrow, anecdotal viewpoint. If it agreed with you, you'd think it was bang on. You're basing the worthiness of something based on whether it backs you up or not. Hardly the basis of sound logic/thinking. Link to comment
Foster14
There is definitely a subjectivity in them in that happiness isn't easily quantifiable and people/authorities will have varying opinions on what that constitutes. Across all such reports though it seems that Scandinavia and Western Europe (as far as Austria/Czech Republic) routinely appear at the top end of these reports. The UK never does too badly in them either, so we aren't in a bad position. I think if pro-independence supporters look to use this kind of information as a support for independence, it has to be from the stance that we can point to similar sized countries in Europe who don't seem to struggle in this regard. It shouldn't be used as a suggestion that Scotland as an independent country can push these countries for a place atop the happiness tables. Pointless and pure conjecture in something which really doesn't mean much to the average person. Link to comment
BrianFaePerth
lykkelig Yes, and put that in a sentence please. No Norwegian would ever use that to describe their happiness. Link to comment

Parklife
whereas you base its worthiness on what?On the fact that it is independent. On the fact that it is produced/edited by some of the most experienced and prominent social studies professors on the planet. On the fact that it's the largest study which measures happiness. On the fact it measures happiness using the same criteria and scoring in every country it studies. You know, all the things that have a bit more weight "than a fat, smelly, creepy, racist from Dundee says..." Link to comment

SheepieBaaBaa
Incorrect. Glad implies affection "glad i deg" for example. "Jeg er glad" is utterly meaningless.No...glad comes from the Germanic origin and has the same root as the English glad. The origin meaning bright, sparkling, joyful.....happy . I don't speak much of any Norwegian beyond the basics, but your contention that they don't have a word for happy is nonsense. Urban myth. Link to comment

Why do Norwegians use the English word happy when they have a plethora of options you could tell them? Link to comment
