Has anybody any experience with hybrid bikes? I want a bike I can do light road use/canal paths etc but also the occasional very fine trail

Best just going for a mountain bike or? Sub 1k ideally.

I'm sure plenty people do yes. You should ask their opinion. Would be a help. Good luck.

Don't listen to Don Fonte, I'll help you out. I have a hybrid, a Trek 7.2 FX, which I bought about 5 years ago. I think it was about £500 at the time, much cheaper now, so definitely at the lower end of the scale. The bike itself is fine, reasonably light and goes well on the road or disused railway lines. However, it's frankly a bit of a pain in the arse. The fact that it's neither one thing nor the other means that off road it's out of it's depth and would probably be quite easy to damage but on road you're sat bolt upright. It sounds like you'd be better with something more robust.

I'd say a great all rounder that offers excellent bang for your buck is the Sonder Camino.

This is an aluminium bike made by Alpkit and is spec'd pretty high for the price.

Worth checking out.

One thing I would always recommend with bikes these days is try and get something that has hydraulic brakes, mechanical brakes do not perform well.

I bought a Muddy Fox for twelve hundred.
Did it up, now it’s worth three grand.

Look at gravel bikes, or adventure bikes as they are sometimes called. I bought a Voodoo Limba bike for about £400 last year which enabled me to punt my road bike, as the Voodoo is still very nimble on the tarmac, but can handle most off road scenarios, other than hardcore mountain stretches.

I have one of these that I used to use for work, a mixture of tarmac and gravel/dirt.
Did the job very well.

Kind of, but I’m nae spring chicken, want to be able to go further than 20 miles, which is all I’m capable of just now, and tackle hillier stretches which are a no no at the mo.

Plus, cycleing into work will be doable once this shit is over, which is too far normally.

Fair point min.
Must admit on my cycle into work a few years back a boy passed me up a hill on his electric bike and I thought I might give it a go-didna tho.
