The Split

After 17 seasons of the 'split' after 33 games, do you think it is definitely well past its sell-by-date ? What is the fucking point of it?!

I am fed up of hearing about the 'split' and the possibility of getting into the 'top 6' and being 'best of the rest' or 'being second to celtic', all boring, medieval clichés that are used time and time again.

Fuck celtic, fuck the rangers, fuck the all-pandering-to-the-celtic-and-the-rangers SFA, fuck the SPFL, fuck the west of scotland media.

Bring back the days of the two divisions to re-energise our game or our game will never be competitive, as it once was, again.

Hate the split, always have.

It is something the media loves.

They think it will make for interesting games.

Absolute rubbish.

Get rid.

My thoughts exactly min. Get rid of it.

The collective whole package of football needs changing, especially in our country, from clubs and the rulers through to the media(that includes getting rid of the farcical split up here that a bunch of suits voted to bring in during the 2000-01 season).

The rules in qualifying for Europe (i.e. why should a team with no European competition heritage, say for arguments sake, Southampton, only need to get through one round before going into the league format of the Europa League whilst Aberdeen continually have to start off in QR1?)through to changing the formats of the two European tournaments need badly revamping. The current formats of both tournaments need changing in order for them both to return to fair competitions instead of what's currently on offer.

The transfer window is another concept which just does not work and helps contributes towards a lot of good players being forced out of football as they cannot secure clubs once they become free agents.

Also whilst on it bring back the Reserve League.

As long as we finish 1st, 2nd or 9th. I'll be happy.

1st would be heaven min, considering the suite that was served up whilst Scotland's No.2 (fucking joke ain't it?) was our boss in the not too distant grim past!

I would like to see a bigger league - 16 or 18 teams - playing each other twice.

But, if sticking with a split, interesting to see how the Bulgarian split pans out.

This year they went with a 14 team league. Play twice then split into a top league of 6 (all teams keep their points) and play twice more. I think that's a fairer system than ours in that there's no cases of teams having three home games against a rival, and you don't get to April still not knowing what the fixtures will be later that month.

Where it maybe gets unfair though is the bottom 8 split into two groups of four; A and B. They play each other twice. The bottom two teams in each group are relegated (so four teams relegated). All good so far.

But then, the top two from each group go into a play-off, where the winner will then play the team that came third in the top 6, with the winner qualifying for the Europa League. I think that bit is unfair as essentially a team that finished 4th doesn't get the chance to play in the play-offs but one finishing in the bottom half does.

Needs work - maybe the winners of the two bottom groups could meet, with the winner of that going into a play-off with 3rd, 4th and 5th.

A complete re-shuffle of the scottish leagues is needed. Should be a 16 team league, then make it premiership, championship and league 1. Each team plays each other twice, one home and once away. For me its a better system, the SFA should look to how the bundesliga is as its tailored to making the german national team as strong as it can be (ie- have to have a minimum amount of germans in your team, and of those they have had to been at the club between a certain age, 15-21 I htink it is). Again just my opinion think it would benefit a lot of teams in scotland and hopefully improve the state of our national team!

I think you'll find Scottish football and Aberdeen FC were at their best when the top division was made up of 10 teams.

To fuck with Stirling Albion at home in early December.

A country of 5 million can't sustain a top league of 16/18. Dickheads.

Explain Norway

Norway is a sovereign and unitary monarchy whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. The Antarctic Peter I Island and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are dependent territories and thus not considered part of the Kingdom. Norway also lays claim to a section of Antarctica known as Queen Maud Land. Until 1814, the kingdom included the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Iceland. It also included Bohuslän until 1658, Jämtland and Härjedalen until 1645, Shetland and Orkney until 1468, and the Hebrides and Isle of Man until 1266.

Norway has a total area of 385,252 square kilometres and a population of 5,258,317. The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden as well as by Finland and Russia to the north-east with Denmark on the other side. Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean.

Some of these suggestions just wouldnt work like having the minimum amount of Scottish players in every team, there would never be enough quality players produced in Scotland for that to work imo. Obviously it would be great if we could produce more quality but cant see it.

I would love for the top league to expand but ultimately there is a limit to what clubs with home gates of 2/3000 can offer. If Dundee Utd, Falkirk and Morton were added to the Premiership along with Hibs next season would there be an increase in the overall quality of the league? I'd say no.

The Glasgow 2 would surely veto any expansion if it meant they only played each other twice. They pure woodnay like that, actually Sevco might at the moment :hysterical:

Brutal truth is that the current setup is maybe the best option for Scottish football.

We can sustain a league of any size we want up tbh. The issue is the quality or practicality involved.

Personally I'm ready to give 16 or 18 a go just to get a break from the split nonsense, reduce the boredom of playing teams 4 times a year and reduce the advantage Celtic have over the chasing teams as a result of 4 games.

Edit: 16 doesn't have a lot of fixures but could be boosted up with some inventive play off system.

Agreed!

I always cringe when i hear the media portraying it as some innovative and genius idea that brings about decent games. Anyone that comes up with the idea that a 7th placed, 8th placed or possible even 9th placed team can finish on more points than one in 6th, needs shot.

and this makes me cringe. It's irrelevant, sure you can figure out why.

Don't mind the split... And a 12 team league (and play offs) has created a bit more excitement for what is essentially a one horse race... However after the split fuck the Bottom 6 in terms of TV money and exposure... The gap between winnings for Top 6 teams and Bottom 6 should be considerably more... And definitely no to expanding the league - if anything the Stenhousemuir's and Edinburgh City's of this world should sort themselves out and there should be no more than about 20 teams and 2 leagues in Scotland...

16 team league.

Celtic and the zombie cunts don't like it, which automatically makes me in favour.

Actually, it's not them that are the biggest objectors. The Old Firm wouldn't be arsed what size of League it was as long as they didn't lose any TV revenue.

It's your Partick Thistles and Motherwells that are against it. Look at the stink they both caused when the fixtures were announced this season and they realised they had less home games v the Old Firm than the others.

And, Stewart Milne isn't exactly a visionary when it comes to how Scottish football is set up. Pretty sure he's voted for a 10 team league and the 8-8-8 nonsense.

They would lose TV revenue because there would be 2 'old firm'* games instead of 4 - they are definitely strongly against it.

No surprise you are defending them again though. And who gives a fuck what Stewart Milne thinks. I was stating my own opinion.

There may be less TV income. Then again BT currently have a contract with no old firm games, and are looking to increase their coverage, so there is every chance the TV deal could remain the same or even increase even with less old firm games.

They wouldn't be hit as hard as other clubs if the TV deal did reduce (well, maybe Rangers). Celtic certainly wouldn't give a toss if their TV income over the season reduced by £200,000 or so when they're raking it in from Europe.

The smaller clubs would, and it's them that would kick up more of a fuss, which was my point.

I wasn't defending them, I was correcting you.

Apologies, I thought it was an Aberdeen forum and therefore what the club's view is would be relevant. I don't know what I was thinking trying to engage a moron in an adult conversation.
