Curtis Main

Motherwell now will get the chance to replace Curtis Main.

Aberdeen? Well, they have brought in a forward with one of the worst goal rates in the past six seasons. His scoring rate last season was on par with Graham Cummins in 2017-18 for St. Johnstone & Ryan Dow in 2014-15 for Dundee United. Cummins now plays in Ireland & Dow played in Scotland’s League Two last season.

Meanwhile, Main has leveraged his output with Motherwell with a move up the league table to Aberdeen.

  • What can be learned here? Well, Main needs A LOT of shots in order to get anywhere close to being an average striker. Even then, his Expected rates for Shot Accuracy, Shooting Percentage & then Conversion Rate tell you there is a real shot selection issue here. Part of that may come down to Motherwell’s style of play, but given his career of being bad - I’d say a lot of that comes down to Main as well.

  • If we had looked at this visual last summer, the warning would be if the shots begin to dry up (they did), the finishing numbers here are an indicator of a bad goal scorer. Main went from slightly below average, to one of the worst strikers the league has seen in the past five seasons.

The guy that wrote that article isn't sitting on the fence!

This is a massive one for McInnes, after the last couple of windows, everyone has been asking questions... he definitely needs to pull one out of the bag.  He's gone hard after Main, but nobody seems to know why... he looks poor and nowhere near good enough for Aberdeen.  A lot of us were saying the same thing about Tansey when we first signed him.  After we bid for him, it was a heads-up, as McInnes usually follows up on his targets... but the ordinary punters couldn't see anything there either!

... the Jambo's are saying this one's payback for Conor Sammon!  Thank fuck McInnes missed out there!

I couldn't be arsed trudging through that article but does it take into account the role Main has been actually been playing with Motherwell recently?  He's not really been expected to be their main source of goals, he's been the big fridge freezer target man who feeds Turnbull etc.

That being said I still think it's a fucking awful signing.

Let's give the boy a chance. I'm not overwhelmed by the signing, but i'll wait until he's actually pulled on a Dons top before saying he's going to be shite.

He'll get a chance, even Aberdeen fans aren't that unfair!   ... but rightly or wrongly, if he is another Tansey, the fans will turn quickly.  I think McInnes will lose a lot of support if he has got this one wrong.

Yes. One of. Do you know why he’s only one of the leagues worst goal rates? Because we had fucking Stevie May and allegedly we’d some guy called Forrester that’s why.

In my eyes he’s not here to score goals necessarily he’s legs to hound down overpaid arse cheek centre halves who think they’re better than they are. Basically do to them what he did to Kari.

Only once he turns out to be shite at that as well do I write him off.

So about 40 minutes in then.

But until then - full support. Inability to press was one of our key failings. We have tried to address that. Next.

It will be a hard challenge to score less than May, Wilson or Anderson. What is the benchmark between shite, ok, good, excellent signing?

If the lad is our 3rd choice striker and scores 8 goals lets say then that would be a decent contribution and infinitely better than this season.

We'll be bringing in another striker yet

That can fuck off

Correct

Main wasn’t playing as the goal scorer and it’s doubtful that’s DMs plan for him either. Yet again, everyone moans like fuck about not having a “Plan B” DM makes signings so that he can have just that and he gets slated. Moaning cunts........ I love it ;)

I assume Main will fill the role May had before Xmas playing off Cosgrove which will be a McInnes tactic in some games.

I'd prefer we just got a proper no 10 for that role though to link midfield and attack properly

Still a couple of signings to go, hopefully a goal scorer in there, whether it’s a striker or a midfielder, who cares, we need another player that can hit at least ten a season

Bit harsh on Anderson - his goals to game ratio for us isn't bad.

Closest we’ve had to that was Madison and I think it was fairly obvious he’d no idea how to use him.

And he was playing off Rooney, as will Main off Cosgrove and neither of those could be described as ‘pressers’ which is the thing we sorely lack and also the thing the top sides seem vulnerable to.

McInnes inability to use players like Maddison is one of a number of examples why he'll never do anything at a higher level than Aberdeen or the SPFL.

Maddison wasn't the full package when he came to us. He swanned about, diving around and had a pretty shite workrate. His spells of brilliance were there to be seen, but he wasn't doing enough to warrant more game time.

He's improved significantly, from what i've seen, in a league where he's not getting kicked about by journeymen and Scott Brown types.

Just watch that standfree, it's clear as fucking days he was by far the best player we had the club

Interesting. Who knew that terrible song went on for 10 minutes.

I genuinely forgot how great he was. It's strange how good a video can make you look. That team generally played some great stuff, I miss those days. Worrying to see Taylor missing simple headers so often in that clip.
