I think someone said above something about making friends or pals. Well, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, though possible I guess. For sure though on forums, you kind of get to know people a bit, albeit anymomously. On aberdeen-mad (and I'm sure on here) there was the full range, from the clueless to those with half a handle on the world. But what I liked was you got to know people/posters and what they were like. Some were a gift. It had the potential to be rewarding.

 

I haven't learnt anything about the world from facebook or twitter. Nothing Zip. Nada. Facebook I admit is hanny to keep in touch with people from other countries or friends who have moved away. Twitter is worse. It fools you into being interesting. Its nothing but a frothing mouth of madness. A platform for virtue signallers. Its evertyhing that's wrong with the 21st century almost. Admittedly, it lets "famous people" speak straight without having 'journalists' interpet their words to their own selfish ends. That's what initially drew me to it, but it's a pointless exercise. Linked-in is just utter utter bollocks. Insta has it's uses and is picturesque.

 

But forums, I think perhaps they're the future in a way. I notice reddit is still very popular, not that i can make head nor tail of it. Forums based though.

I don't think 'Social Media' is separate from Forums. It's just that forums were around far before the term 'Social Media' was coined.

 

Forums have always been a niche and specialist place to congregate and discuss topics.

 

It was once theorised (by SOTR? Can't remember) that with the rise of Facebook and Twitter, forums would die out, but i'm not seeing that.

 

We receive more traffic than ever before. Apart from because we're fucking ace, is because of the rapid increase and adoption of 'Smart phones' and affordable data plans.

 

People check the forum far more frequently than they ever have.

10-15 years ago there were less people using the internet - but before twitter, facebook, etc, forums would have pretty well 100% of the traffic. Obviously with a complete cross section of society.

 

There are more people online these days and smart phones have obviously increased accessibility... however, the market share for the forums has dropped considerably. Today, the majority of online football discussion is via facebook or twitter (wheres 10-15 years ago forums and email mailing lists/newsgroups were the only options) - I have no idea how to quantify it, but I would imagine >> 99%! Forums are a bit more niche... definitely more popular with the older demographic.

 

Not sure I've explained that properly... but what I'm trying to say, is that there has been a shift in the past 15 years.

I see forums and social media as separate things. SOTR makes an interesting observation about an age demarcation between the two (someone must have told him to say that).

 

I like forums for the freedom to start topics and contribute to, or ignore, others. And the fact that they are fundamentally "discussion forums" and so set up to be read in a flowing and logical way. I also like the comparative anonymity compared to social media.

 

I dislike social media and think its quite sinister in some ways.

 

Twitter seems to be chiefly a vehicle to mobilising the unthinking, left-wing masses, such that they will all rush to affirm whatever bone their masters are throwing them today. Be it #metoo, #blacklivesmatter, #everyonelookatme, #imsoimportant or whatever other idiotic dross they are currently getting excited about.

 

Facebook seems to be a way to conveniently collate a lot of personal information about yourself to facilitate monitoring by Government agencies or those who would seek to make trouble for you, or steal your identity. Other than that, people just seem to collect contacts with people whom they haven't seen in years and never speak to.

 

it genuinely amazes me that people want pictures and information about themselves plastered all over the internet, in a permanent and uncontrollable way. Nothing good ever comes of this. Every so often there is a news story about someone forced to resign or publicly shamed, because a 5-yr old tweet has turned up where they said something about "big tits" or expressed reservation about immigration or something.

 

If the Government wanted to create a big database about everyone and their business, people would be up in arms wrt privacy and civil liberties. But, pitch it as a way to "keep in touch with friends", and folk rush to take part without thought.

 

I dont like to think that I leaving an electronic trail and personal info everywhere and that there are files about what I like and dislike, how much I am online and where, what I spend money on, blah blah blah.

 

I think a large part of both twitter and facebook is simply automated accounts / "bots" to make them look much more popular than they really are.

 

I have checked the twitter accounts of one of two people who I know and all they seem to do is endlessly retweet someone else's messages to one another. They never say anything new, just retweet the same info over and over. Like organic "bots". I pity them that they don't seem to have anything better to do with their time.

 

Ultimately, stuff like Facebook and Twitter exist for the benefit of someone - and 100%, for sure, its not for the benefit of we ordinary people.

Most people really aren't as interesting or funny as they like to believe, and i really don't need to know their every waking thought or what they had for dinner. Remember people used to joke about dreading having to look at other peoples holiday photos, now they go out of their way to look at them on facebook. It's a database for government agencys and people with something to sell, a kind of voluntary spyware.
