So it will be the Champions League, Europa League will be the Champions League Consolation Cup and a new cup for the rest.

Celtic in a group with a team that they knocked out of the Champions League, before being knocked out in the next round themselves.

Along with an energy drink derby to make up the group.

Load of shite.

Hahaha. Aye, well surmised.

Bild reporting yesterday that UEFA are considering a third European competition.

The crux is that they plan to cut the number of teams in the Europa League group stage, so not convinced it'll be much easier to get into. And it basically is just to justify closing the doors of the Champions League to anyone but the elite.

But, if getting knocked out by Burnley was followed by being entered into a play-off round of whatever they would call this third one, I would take it.

Some of the teams knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers this season:-

Feyenoord, Atalanta, AZ Alkmaar, Vitesse Arnhem, Brøndby, Burnley, Sparta Prague, Basel, Maribor, AIK Stockholm, Steau Bucharest.

Could be some decent games there.

Uefa is set to launch a third European club competition from the start of the 2021-22 season, European Club Association (ECA) president Andrea Agnelli has confirmed.

In his opening address at the ECA’s biannual general meeting in Split on Tuesday, the Juventus chairman said: “Pending approval of the Uefa executive committee, the green light has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021/22 season.”

This means the Europa League’s group stage will be reduced from 48 teams to 32, with the new competition and the Champions League all having the same number.

Uefa has made little secret of the fact that it has been looking at ways to raise the Europa League’s profile while also giving more clubs a shot at European competition, and therefore its growing financial benefits.

In recent weeks, Uefa has said it is “constantly reviewing” its competitions and has been “discussing various ideas within its Club Competitions Committee before any decision on potential changes would be made”.

But with Agnelli and Arsenal boss Ivan Gazidis representing the ECA on Uefa’s 17-member ExCo, it would seem the decision to reintroduce a third Uefa competition for the first time since the demise of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999 is a done deal.

They've increased the money teams earn in the CL by 30%, so it's not surprising they'll want to ensure it's only the big clubs compete in that, whilst the rest of us get the scraps in another competition.

Aye not exactly opening up European football for the masses. Only 16 extra teams will be in European competition, with 16 teams who would have been in the Europa League now punted to a lesser competition.

Don't be surprised if this new competition plays it's matches on Fridays and Mondays. Tue-Wed-Thu already full of UEFA matches and broadcasting is the only way their competitions are sustainable.

We'll still be punted out in the qualifiers.

Can't help but think the new competition will be a sweetener before they stop teams from shit nations like Scotland from competing in the champions league.

The Nations league could be used to rank the countries and only the elite get the champions league.

I don’t particularly mind that elite grouping (for elite read rich and hence self sustaining) it’s the UEFA cup safety nets they have that rips my knitting.
