Fairly typical British play/movie at the tail end of an era where happy endings and feel-good movies were frowned upon by the British public. See Scum. Threads, Wickerman, Sleuth,  Long Good Friday, Clockwork Orange, etc. 

Trevor was never winning the Pools and heading to Belize with his love interest. 

On a very related note, how's this for an actual thing you can buy?
