10-15 year ago the place was mintal. The scraps upstairs were always a laugh. Everyone would know everyone, I was making a mint off of selling E's. Halycon days.

I think it reopened a while back but it was all European/ Indian sorts. Good location, too. Just canna shake the 'shithole' tag I guess

Got myself into a few scrapes in there back in the day.

Fancy dress scrapping on my 21st was a personal favourite.

One of Aberdeen’s oldest pubs is poised for a modern makeover after suddenly shutting up shop.

The Old Kings Highway on The Green is the longest-standing hostelry in the city, having first opened its doors in 1741.

But staff told customers over the weekend that the venue was being shut down so that it can be taken over by another entity.

Yesterday those looking to enter the pub were left disappointed as its front doors were locked.

The Old Kings Highway has now been listed by Star Pubs – the pub business of brewing giant Heineken – as available for lease.

Documents uploaded for potential investors revealed that the landlord is planning an “extensive” refurbishment of the premises.

They state: “This refurbishment will transform The Old Kings Highway into a fantastic traditional city centre ale house with a small and focused food offering.

“An additional cocktail and craft beer focused trading space on the first floor will be introduced, complete with its own entrance and toilets.

“Updated interior décor will be incorporated throughout the bar, uplifting the space, but keeping true to the traditional look and feel of the venue.”

Star Pubs is also proposing to add a small prep kitchen which would allow it to serve a “focused food menu”.

Meanwhile an artist’s impression has shown proposals for an overhaul of the outside of the building, featuring a navy and gold colour scheme, with prominent references to its heritage.

It also shows a number of tables and chairs on the pavement for al-fresco drinking and dining.

A spokeswoman for Star Pubs and Bars said: “We would like to undertake a major refurbishment of The Old Kings Highway in Aberdeen, subject to recruiting a new operator.

“The plans are in keeping with the pub’s history and architecture but would make the pub more comfortable and contemporary, introduce food and broaden the drinks range to encompass everything from cocktails to cask ale.”
