That video montage doesn’t disprove StandFree1982’s comments. It shows some of the “spells of brilliance” that SF1982 spoke about.

Also shows a helluva lot of “no end product”.

Also shows that when you filter his best, or most promising moments, they by and large, all came from the central area of the pitch.  It was so frustrating to see him stuck out wide so often during that period.

He wasn’t stuck out wide very often, if at all. Sometimes he would drift out wide from a more central position but he wasn’t stuck out on the touchline , like for instance , Hayes and McGinn were

I find it pretty mental that folk still think Maddison wasn't "that good" when he was with us.  Easily one of the best players I've seen pull on the shirt for fuck knows how long, unfortunately our manager had no idea how to use him

The boy also got fuck all protection from referees.  The league cup final was a particular disgrace, as the tims were practically lining up to foul him.  Didn't blame him at the time for not wanting to come back up to us and I still don't.  He was too good for us and this league.

Rooney moving like an oil tanker was Maddison’s biggest problem.

Aye Maddison was obviously a great player, I think a big part of the problem was he was a step ahead of the players around him. Would put his head up to pick a pass and no one had made the run, Rooney being slower than a week in jail also didn't help on that front

I don't think anyone has said he wasn't "good". He was brilliant in spells, but was constantly diving around, falling over and had very little end product.  Plus, as you've mentioned, he was getting kicked all over the park.

I agree with BWG, we had a cracking player who McInnes didn't utilise properly.

He showed ability far superior to others around him but not often enough - could be down to 1) as others said fuck all protection from refs and 2) McInnes not using him properly.

However since this is a curtis main thread, lets not forget about our new 40 goal a season striker!!.. loooool

How should we have utilised him though? Our form improved when he left and we weren't trying to fit the team around a young player who was in on loan.

Fantastic player though. Joy to watch when he is on it.

Is this the new go to phrase for anyone who's half decent, but doesn't do a job for us? "It's because McInnes wasn't using him properly".  Stewart was absolutely fucking ding for us in two loan periods, that's not all down to McInnes.

He might struggle for 40 goals in a career, a bouncer version of Darren Mackie.

Stewart was shite and found out, twice.  Maddison was and is a superb player.

I'd have maybe not papped him out on the wing and expected him to play the same game as Niall McGinn, if I were McInnes.

Maddison did his best work through the middle finding those little pockets of space to operate in.  He could unlock defences and make things happen.  Running up and down the line was not an effective use of him.

Stewart though, again, is a fat hun fuck.  So it's not always Derek's fault.

Maddison didn't give his own defence much protection in that particular game either; at fault for not tracking back for at least one of the goals.

And this is is the rub; during his time with us the boy was tremendous with the ball but extremely naive without it.  It was this latter bit that, at that time in his career, prevented him reaching the heights he is now at.  All part of learning.  It was never in doubt for me though that he'd be a top player, he just needed some hard knocks to sort out his perceived laziness.

I liked Main when he first joined Motherwell, I think many of us did.  I'm inclined to think that since Motherwell changed their style of play 1/3 of the way through last season he is one of the players to have suffered for it.  Even the boy Cadden, another talented player, and admittedly injured for a spell, had a pretty poor season last year.  The Main signing does have a bit of Myles Storey about it but it's maybe a gamble worth taking when you have a guy with Connor McLennan's stats firing killer balls into the box and needing someone to take on Cosgrove's knock-downs. Cossie has turned into a tremendous target man in a short time and I think we need to give the manager the benefit of the doubt that he can do something with Main as well.

My memory of Maddison is him playing through the middle. Every one of those highlights shows him through the middle.
