A Heart Full of Headstones - well worth reading.

There is apparently a new series of Rebus coming on the telly focusing on his younger days. Hopefully it's more Ken Stott than John Hannah.

Definitely preferred Ken Stott...more of a 'battered', weather-beaten look. It's how i picture Rebus.

Amazon saying it's not released until April and can only pre-order in paperback. Where did you get a copy ?

Finally got round to reading Tenement Kid by Bobby Gillespie. Decent read.

Not read that one but will put it on my list.

Currently reading "There is nothing for you here" by Fiona Hill. British lass who grew up in a decaying mining town and ended up working in the White House. Bleak in parts but enjoying it.

im reading detective series based in Norwich called "Swallow". Swallow is a detective who tackles vandalism. Bit of a maverick, not afraid to break the law if he thinks it's necessary. He's not a criminal, you know, but he will, perhaps, travel 80mph on the motorway if, for example, he wants to get somewhere quickly...

decent read so far

Never read it but will give it a go.

What's the issue with it?

I have tried, and failed on numerous occasions, to read "Catch 22" but just can't get into it.

Yeah, same. Dunno, some books arero just hard to get into. I usually give up after 20 or so pages, but there's some I just have to return to.

Maybe it's because the story is told through the eyes of the chief...which wasn't how the movie was told

Been on  a Cold War kick of late.

MiG Pilot: The Final Escape of Lt. Belenko.  Brilliant book about the defection of a Soviet pilot who nabs a 'state of the art' MiG25 and books it out of Russia a'la Clint Eastwood in Firefox.  This one's a true story, though.

Inside the Soviet Army: Just what it says on the cover.

Inside the Soviet Army - The Liberators:  A more personal take on the previous book.

August 1985: Fictionalised account (obviously) of the Third World War

Armor at Fulda Gap: Fictionalised (American) account of the Third World War. Has a lot more pictures than the previous book.

Judge Dredd: The Apocalypse War. Judge Dredd and a band of hardy Street Judges defeat the Sov Bloc as they attack the peace-loving citizens of Mega City One. Classic.

Anyone read Shuggie Bain? Would you recommend?

Considering as my next kindle purchase.

Overly long and the ending is shite.

Consider it to be poverty porn.

I strongly believe that 'the English establishment' encourage literature or any other art that paints Scotland in a depressing light - hence the 2020 Booker award.

Given the writing style it won't take that long to read so provided it will fit in your suitcase(?), I'd check out a copy from your local library instead.

'Ham on Rye' by Charles Bukowski covers similar ground (coming of age with a different temperament) in a much better and more fulfilling way.
