With the high cost of living these days after Christmas and New year , come February I'm expecting quite a number of coffee shops , restaurants and clothes shops to close .

On-line shopping won't help either .

I really hope I'm wrong because back in the 60s and 70s I remember sitting on the top deck of the number 22 bus on a Saturday morning looking up union street and seeing just a mass of heads that's how busy it used to be .

Affa sad to see it all falling apart.

I agree with you - and the whole working from home isnt helping the coffee shops / sandwich shops / restaurants etc either due to lack of footfall

On line shopping is here to stay though, town centers are going to be for socialising (bars) or "local" shoppies only  - oh, and nail bars / tattoo parlours / card shops (how many do we need) and charity shops - depressing

Aye but the thing is, society has moved on - some for the good and some for the bad. The High Street will NEVER be the way it was primarily due to the British obsession with Supermarkets and the global rise of online shopping. Look at how many independent butchers, bakers, fruit and Veg shops that there were in Aberdeen back in the 80's and early 90's before the large supermarkets started taking hold compared to how many there are now. Those that are left (i.e. Butchers) now offer a far better standard and selection of goods than the previously did primarily as a means of competing with the Supermarket. You will always get people who want the cheapest meat they can buy but similarly there are folk who don't mind spending £60 for a Roast Sirloin joint on a Sunday.

One poster on here answered their own point when they said they had not been in Aberdeen shopping for years and was amazed at how run down the place was - if you don't support local business don't expect it to survive.

Coffee shops - truth is that we are at saturation point with these and they cannot all survive - there is only so much coffee and cake you can eat in a day (take note @ Bluto).

I believe that there will always be a need for shops but, as most have already done, they need to look at their service offering and adapt accordingly - i.e. offer online sales as well as shop.
