Free kicks

What is going on with our free kicks and surely this is something that Glass and the strikers’ coach Allan Russell should be working on at Cormack Park.

In all the games I’ve watched so far, our vast array of cunning free kick routines seem to be limited solely to one, whereby two players, normally the full backs who run 50 yards, then stand over the ball. One player’s specialised role seems solely to be to put two hands in the air (I bet he learned that at Cormack Park!), whilst the other player hits the free kick. I can’t recall seeing anything other than an outswinging free kick.

we are unbelievably predictable at free kicks. The players know what’s coming, the fans know what’s coming and crucially the opposition know what coming. The end result - we get nothing from the free kick and all the players scamper back to their normal positions. Surely a professional club, with a specialist strikers’ coach can do better than this.

The hands in the air/ hands touching the ball, will be a timing issue for the free kick routine. I get what you say though.

A couple of times on sunday, a simple ball in the channel could have played in Ojo and Hayes for a good attacking opportunity. Neither opportunity was taken though and the ball was swung in on top of their large defenders

We've actually been unlucky not to score from more set pieces this season.

We were unlucky none of the corners worked out for us v County. It’s obvious we’ve been working on the movement to win the first header, just a pity the ball never fell kindly to anyone after.

As said above Ramsay can actually beat the first man more often than not, so it’s a vast improvement on recent seasons.

Yes, it’s obvious they’ve been working on corners, but I was talking about free kicks. Surely we can get some variety beyond two guys standing there, one left footer, one right footer, then it’s hands up and hit an outswinger.

What else do you suggest putting over the ball as well as the right & left footer?

Whatever they're working on now can't be any worse than hitting the nearest defender 10 times out of 10. 

Even getting it down to 9 times out of 10 will be progress of a sort.

Try an inswinger  or pass down the line; have everybody go deep at back post, somebody makes run to near post, play to feet etc. we’ve shown some great alternative options from corners, I’m hoping that we can do the same thing from free kicks - it’s not that difficult.

Well I thought it was a scuffed shot that a defender cleared of the line on the way to the goal

So when we finally have a decent set piece taker capable of beating the first man & easily hitting the back post area just out of keepers reach you want us to stop doing so?

 

Admittedly we do not seem to have anyone capable of attacking said balls to back post since we lost Considine ?

To be fair we had several capable of hitting the back post but they’re too used to then hanging around there waiting for Mcginns free kicks to come back down.

If my counting is right, we’ve played 10 games so far. If for example, we assume 4 free kicks per game in attacking positions, then potentially that’s 40 goal scoring opportunities. My memory is hazy, but I can’t recall I goal scored coming from a free kick. 
all I’m saying is mix things up a bit, show some invention and to stop doing EXACTLY the same thing at every free kick. Who knows, it might even lead to some goals.

For the size that McInnes liked to employ (read Lummox) our return from free kicks was never particularly high though.

Ok, assuming that your assumptions are fair, what's the league average?

According to Glass we hadn’t had enough time to coach the players as we have mostly be playing, resting then preparing a bit for matches. 
I will give him the benefit of doubt and see how we get on during our next few matches. I certainly expected a lot more input from Allan Russell than what has been currently shown in our team. 
Hopefully this changes as we have more than enough time now to prepare properly and work hard on set pieces etc.

Thank you. That makes sense. I suggest parking this topic until the coaches have had additional time to spend with the players to hopefully make some of our free kicks a wee bit more inventive.

To be fair it’s nae exactly difficult to signal ball is going front or back post and then being a professional footballer putting it there

As someone mentioned above, whats the league average? If Free Kicks were so easy to pull off, you'd see a LOT more goals in games. 

In the Premier League in England, the most goals scored by a team from a set piece was 16 out of 38 games, which is pretty good.  The least is 4, which is pretty bad. The average is 10. Baring in mind this is one of the top leagues in the world with some of the best players in the world.

Trying to find the Scottish equivalent, but found an article on SPFL from 2010 Link Here which had the goals scored and conceded from set pieces, the most was 10. 

We've scored two this season in Europe: Considine and Ramirez.

The Ramirez one was from a nicely worked corner. Can’t recall the Considine one. 
I’m getting repetitive now, but all I’m looking for is some variation in our free kick routine. I’ll shut up now but hopefully Glass and Russell can come up with something now that they have more time on the training ground.

I remember reading somewhere that something like 1 in 12 corners results in a goal 

That's why continental fans get less excited by corners.
