What's a fair wage?

Tory MP asks for payrise as living on £82k a year can be 'really grim' | Metro News

I find myself agreeing with Sir Peter on this one, £82k a year for an MP really isn't a huge amount of money considering how long they're away from home and the hours they put in. They should at least be on a par with doctors.

It also begs the question of what is an acceptable wage for anyone doing a job, I think the minimum is far too low, if businesses can't afford to pay people what they need to live on then they shouldn't be employing people, I'd say £15 an hour should be a base. I'd also say the average wage should be nearer £50k instead of the current £30, as Boris said yesterday, we should be aiming for a high skilled high paid workforce. People shouldn't have to scrape by. It's time for change, hopefully Boris will deliver.

I am aware you're on the wind up, but couldn't let this go without pointing out the fact that Sir Peter claimed 159,000 in expenses as well.

I remember getting £3.75 an hour with a 75p an hour "attendance bonus" you got if you weren't late or off sick the previous week. If you did overtime it was an extra £40 and that got you a half decent night out at the time. Income tax allowance was about 3 grand a year so you got taxed to the balls.

For picking fruit?

No although I've done the berries plenty. Used to get paid by weight. Raspberries were easy as fuck, Strawbs not so much.

If you were getting paid by weight you'd be minted!

Haha!

I used to get £3.50 an hour working as a KP in a restaurant. Awful job. Boss was a hun cunt, used to run with the ASC but started supporting Rangers in the 90's and pretended he was true blue. He was part owner and him/the other chef used to keep all the tips to themselves. We were on buttons and spoken to/treated like shit.

It gave me a good idea of what the working world was like. Full of cunts and totally and utterly unrewarding.

Name and shame Consi, that sounds particularly bad. You need to get yersel in wi the council. Easy number, decent conditions, you could get in wi the union it'd suit you down to the ground.

Edit - meant to be taking on 500 or so at the new dole place in Dundee. That will be a cushy as fuck number.

It was about 10 years ago.

I had no idea, I thought everywhere else was like that. Eventually just never went back.

Hated that place, proper stunk every time I came home.

I'd rather take home less and get better public services.

The Noggies have it spot on.

High tax is good. Brits like low taxes but then spend their dough on absolute shite.

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/news/2021/oct/04/pandora-papers-at-a-glance Generally speaking, if we aggressively went after the mega rich, you could take home the same- and have better public services yet.

Doesn't have to be one or the other

The Chinese are planning to implement policies that will address the growing gap between rich and poor, an issue the West ignores.

Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly, their corporations are on board because they understand how this shit works.

I've always said Socialism, or variations of, is the only sustainable long-term policy.

"but when the push towards more companies publicly backing Xi Jinping's new vision first started, it did come as a "bit of a shock", one major Chinese company told me privately.

"But then we got quite used to the idea. It's not about robbing the rich. It's about restructuring society, and building up the middle class. And we are a consumption business at the end of the day - so it's good for us."
