You've hit the nail on the head here, the reason people are so pissed off, is because instead of accurate reporting they took information from people who actually work for the Kremlin (Russian military, DPR officialdom etc). While ignoring their own employees/partners and not even giving them or the Ukrainian officials the chance to counter any claims. 

I do agree that almost all media is biased, it's a shite state of affairs. There are a few individuals and small groups who still have some credibility but are indeed few and far between.
